[BOOK] The Body Snatchers by Jack Finney

Another sci-fi classic that I have seen filmed two times which made me want to know the original story. The Body Snatchers are pods, plantlike lifeforms who can grow to imitate perfectly anything organic. They also replace the living original with the replica. Since humans and other animals are more than the sum of neurological synapses controlling bodies of flesh and bone, the yet unreplicated in the small California town where the pods arrive, become justifiably concerned about the behaviour of some of their loved ones.

For the main characters of the story, the truth is hard to grasp, but they come to directlly confront the replicas of their former trusted friends. The conversation between the still humans and the symbolic humans is eerie to say the least and took me back to all the times I have been corrected by other humans about my diet, beliefs, opinions, music taste and dress code violations. "Join us, become like us and you won't have any worries anymore."

Good science fiction can be so much more than entertainment when it takes a critical look at human behaviour. [Dell Books]
