I first read about Bane in 1995 in a zine that I didn't order but it came with a non-Bane related mailorder package anyway. Such was the magic of the pre-internet music landscape. The article spoke about their lyrics, attitude and clumsily tried to describe their sound. I decided that there was a band that I'd like. Two years pass and I order a VHS tape with bootlegged shows by Converge, 108 and Bane. Not long after I sent more well concealed cash to the States to buy more Bane bootlegs.
I was instantly hooked. They connected with me on a different level than all the other metal, hardcore and punk bands I was all about at the time. Another favourite band. For many years after these moments Bane was very important to me and I tore a page out of their lyric book and added it to my perspective on people, the world and my life when writing my lyrics.
I've stuck behind this band. I related to them on a musical, "cultural" and personal level. I've travelled far to see them play, I tried booking them in Iceland, and I've been so immersed in them that I feel comfortable in criticising various aspect of the band as well. I think that speaks volumes in regards to a band-fan relationship of sort. These guys aren't that much older than me and I totally appreciate them writing this final chapter and putting the band to rest. But I'm still saddened by these news although I assumed this was to become for a few years now.
Thank you Bane for giving your best shot of making hardcore more than just music. It was an uphill battle that you took on. For that I'm grateful and for this. For your great songs, the expression and fantastic lyrics, and the ability to bring people together... You have a special place in the annals of history.

Bane was a crucial band for me and my development/outlook via punk and hardcore. They have a clear and distinct place in history as a one-of-a-kind band that tried and managed to transcend "just music."
