[BOOK] An Intimate History of Humanity by Theodore Zeldin (1994)

This is a book that investigates the emotional life of civilised humans from a historical perspective. Each short chapter starts with outcomes of interviews and observations of one or more modern individuals in France and then Zelden takes off into love, life, norms and neuroses, career and culture and people's expectations towards life through the ages and trough the world.
As Zelden puts the expectations of modern man into historical and cultural perspective the book takes the reader out of his or hers historical myopic view of the world. People did feel and suffer in the same way as today in ancient China or middle age Spain and with this book you learn how they dealt with it.
As a beautifully written book that draws from a wide array of examples, little stories and insights this might be a book that can actually change your life. [Harper Collins]
