Origin is a band hotly debated in my circles (Curious as to why? Ask us in the comments section). This a good thing and something all bands should celebrate. Everyone seems to know Origin and everyone has an opinion. I ran "Manifest Desolate" by the Halifax Collect and below you can tap into our first impressions of the song. But before you do, listen to the song.
Origin's upcoming 6th album, Omnipresent, is set to be released on July 4th in Europe via Agonia Records (July 8th in North America via Nuclear Blast).
William: So this track left me wanting more; but not in a good way. The drums are sick as always but the guitar seems a bit lacking. It might have just been the quality of the recording but I felt like I was drowning in mid-tones and desperately grasping for some clarity to stay afloat. I've been into this band for years and I really want to hear the entire album; but at this point, there are 3 Origin albums that I'd rather listen to.
Are you impressed with it Birkir?
Birkir: I'm not sure. I've had a troubled relationship with this band in the past. Being troubled is better than having no relationship at all, so I always give them a twirl when something new comes out.
Bogi: Sound is over-compressed and flat which certainly contributes to the "relentless" feel of the song and style. But then, being drowned in cow shit is also a "relentless" experience. The turnaround of the song that happens around 2.30 or so is too little too late, hey let's throw in a mosh part, for variety's sake...." for fucks sake.
Birkir: Ah, that 2:30 part. Chuck Schuldiner would be proud.
James: Certain bands can release basically the same album time and time again without it growing stale, whereas with other bands, it just seems redundant. Maybe I'm just jaded due to death metal overdose in my younger years, but I definitely think Origin fall into the latter category. Technically sound but just really boring to my ears... There's nothing here that stands out from the pack. Informis... was their peak in my humble opinion - this song sounds like a rehash.
Kinda pissed that I paused The Human League to listen to this track...
Birkir: A quick glance and I already disagree with some of my compadres above. To my ears Origin has rarely, if ever, sounded this savage and on point. Maybe it's my headphones, but the production here isn't as cleaned up and mechanic like in the past. Furthermore, I've never really heard such a "simple" Origin song. Mind, I've never been a fervid fan and honestly had little patient for their technical fireworks and million chang-up's per song, so "Manifest Desolate" comes as a real surprise to me. Here they sound harder than they do professorly. I applaud that.
