A few years ago, the Icelandic metal scene was rather simple. There were a handful of death metal and black metal bands along a few hardcore bands. However, that has changed and today there's more variety with nice additions of various sub genres. One of them is stoner doom band Godchilla, but they have been gaining following the past few years and have now released their first full length album, entitled Cosmatos.
The album starts off with a slide guitar intro, drawing the listener to the swamps in the deep south, before the fuzzed out heaviness comes out blaring in the tale of "Montag the Magnificent." The song is fast and aggressive, but things soon slow down and get groovy.
Even though this trio is from Iceland, their sound is somewhere else. Drawing influences from here and there, they manage to brew a mighty fine blend of fuzzy stoner riffs and mind altering psychedelia, which they offer the listener. There are no low points on Cosmatos. It's well written, well performed and sounds good.
Godchilla is an exciting band that deserves attention and Cosmatos is a great album. The atmosphere connected to individual songs flows well and the aggressiveness and anger is right on point, never overdoing it.
With a big sound dragged from the murkiest and sludgiest pits found in this universe, Godchilla are hopefully here to stay. It is worth mentionging that the last song on the album, "Close to the Beyond/Hypnopolis", is hands down the best stoner doom song ever written (sorry Electric Wizard).
All worshippers of the riff will find something to soothe their hunger for all things heavy and groovy on Cosmatos. [Self released]
