It’s been a long and hard road full of pitfalls and dead ends, but with Black Crown Initiate’s debut EP, we seem at long last to have reached peak death metal.
This EP was apparently released some time last year, during the band’s first year of existence, which is a sentence I can’t believe I just wrote. The fact that no one has recommended this recording to me at any point during the past year is baffling beyond belief, because anyone who doesn’t devote at least an hour a day to this orgiastic ode to perfection is simply leaving ALL the money on the table.
The EP draws equally from every facet of modern death metal, without getting bogged down with overt technicality, too much emphasis on melody, or tedious thematic concerns. Instead it masterfully mixes blast, groove, emotion, aggression, clean vocals, growls and tasteful solos into a passionate potpourri of perfection. This is like something Mikael Åkerfeldt dreams of having enough talent to write.
I could keep on ejaculating laudatory jizz of adulation all over this epic example of songwriting skill until I've emptied out my stock of vocabulary, but I don’t want to keep the reader from clicking on the link below for one second longer than necessary. [eOne]

Nah ... excellently executed but my kinda death metal is ugly.
ReplyDeleteI didn't write this review but, yes, my kinda death metal is ugly AND/OR not-so-ugly, what with having come up through death metal via everything from Autopsy to Cynic, Asphyx to Death... You catch my drift. I play on both teams. I find this EP extremely well written, thoughtful and dynamic without being annoyingly so. And who know a "jent part" could be interesting or even melodic?
ReplyDeleteHmmm... as a massive Opeth fanboi I didn't care much for the Åkerfeldt comment. Gave the album a quick listen and it sounds pretty darn interesting. Just bought the EP and going to give a proper listen.
ReplyDeleteCheers for the headsup.
