Misþyrming’s debut full length on Norway’s Terratur Possesions, is a seething and multi-layered beast full of infernal discord and broken strains of screeching and disharmonious melodies, all churning under a violent, writhing, surface of malice and discontent.
There is little beauty involved other than the aesthetics of punishment, although atmospheric interludes of doomed synth meanderings interspersing song from chaotic song provide welcome moments of relief from the album’s continuous dispersal of sonic harm.
The chaos, however, is fully controlled, even labored over, and the depth of artistic expression is thoroughly underpinned by a visually arresting album cover and grand, poetic song titles that attest to lyrical content with all the sweeping narrative of the more brutal Sagas.
Söngvar elds og óreiðu largely does away with the technical, but relies on an oppressive atmosphere of turbulent emotion to shake the listener to his innermost core, and as such does a remarkable job.[Terratur Possesions]
