THRONE OF KATARSIS - The Three Transcendental Keys

A little under six years ago I heard about this band, one of hundreds, if not thousands, black metal bands Norway has created for us. Somewhere deep in the mountains of Norway a sigil is buried, and because of that sigil Norwegians cannot stop the black metal madness.

That is, in its nature both good and bad. You have an enormous amount of bands all creating something but it's also bad because it can lead to stagnation with bands merely trying to copy each other and transforming themselves into something similar to the Borg.

When I first heard of Throne of Katharsis I judged the book by its cover and lumped them in the second category. With a demo in front of me called Unholy Holocaustwinds, could you blame me? The members of the band on the cover... I loved the look and how it “all looked so much like Immortal” that I completely forgot to pay any attention to the music on the cassette and there the tape is. In one of the shelves I keep my cassettes in, collecting dust.

So now we come to this year's release. Six years have passed and the band has added on some pounds with Sanrabb and Skinndod from Gehenna joining Vardalv and Infamroth. Three albums have been released and now the band releases its fourth one. The old influences are still here but there is also some new blood in here. The Three Transcendental Keys work as a machine to bring us the past, the present and the possible future of Norwegian black metal and the band is very monotonous and heavy on the ritual. That isn't always a good thing. How many times have we seen or heard bands that obviously have a great idea but aren't able to properly execute it? It has happened all too often but thankfully this isn't one of these cases. Throne of Katarsis have created an album I'm sure will be on many top-lists this year if it gets the recognition it deserves. [Candlelight]
