We've talked to and looked at Oakey's work before (see related stories below) and you'd be forgiven thinking he's only involved with music videos, The World Is Burning ((watch) notwithstanding... You're forgiven not knowing about that one really, what with Oakey not being a mainstream media darling, but I digress. Just hit and enjoy the hyperlink two lines up. Do it! Mind you, one Mat McNerney of Hexvessel scored the damn thing (Score to be released as CD/DVD and LP/DVD packages by Svart Records).
When Nolan told me he'd done the soundtrack for Oakey's most recently released creation, I knew I had to contact both men and get more fat on the story. Turns out, this film is a horror film, and as such a contender in a horror film contest. I'm gonna call his a terror film. Watch now and then read about how it all came to be and how you can help M is for Motherland to reach a wider audience!
You are getting quite known for doing great/thoughtful music videos and I have the feeling you've become sought after by many bands and labels. Rather than do another music video, you've put together this disturbing flick.
I'm glad you like my videos! It comes and goes, sometimes a bunch of people want videos, but I haven't been asked in a while. I was focusing on my last dramatic short (The World Is Burning, and its festivals and screenings etc.) and doing other things for a while, such as this micro-short film. Originally I told my girlfriend she should be doing this competition. She's working as a director on a fairly big horror TV series and I thought this would be a fun opportunity, but later she encouraged me to do something as well. Knowing whatever I put together would be a little different than the other entries, I feel like we ended up with (quoting a comment on Facebook) "real world terror" rather than typical gore or monster movie standards, i.e. what is expected of The ABCs of Death competition. Andrew Nolan's music definitely has elements of "horror movie" soundtracks, but it's far more pummeling and hypnotic - in my opinion it certainly adds an "exploitational" layer to the film, without damaging the realism.
Yeah, his music gives the realism a bit more ghastly and evil edge, complimenting what you are seeing. So, how can the readers help M is for Motherland reach more viewers and conceivably add more fuel on Oakey's fire of terror, resulting in more movie unpleasantries?
Readers can help me win in two ways, both equally important, (1) voting/clicking "like" on that button over the player (here), and (2) by sharing it on Facebook/Tumblr/anywhere social. I would be very grateful for either!
How did this come about, Andrew? You are respected for your involvement in extreme music, be it bands or noise projects of sorts, all abrasive and not for the faint of heart. It was pleasantly surprising seeing you involved in film.
Justin was the first drummer in Purity Control, I scored a student film for him. He made videos for Slaughter Strike and Column of Heaven. He's also done work for Hexvessel, Ride at Dawn, and Hooded Menace.
Is this the first time you do a soundtrack? Have did the process differ from making music just for yourself or your bands?
Every time I've scored something so far it's been a reconfiguring of material I was either already working on or had abandoned entirely. The material that makes Motherland is from three sources; two of the sources are Wolves of Heaven, which was set up to be an umbrella for anything that didn't fit under our usual style, and one is a small sectioned taken from its context of an unreleased Column of Heaven track.
It's not 100% original music for this film because there was a very quick turnaround time, I think it was 24 hours between being asked to participate and actually delivering it. Originally Justin suggested something more droning and menacing, but I felt that we could do something different and add another dimension to the film. I worked out two rough cuts and ultimately discarded one because the atmosphere during the murder was too contradictory, it became a weirdly spiritually uplifting violence, which was not the aim of the film.
