Bonethrone. Throne of bones. People and animals die and rot and nature takes care of the rest until the only thing left is bones. Nature takes care of bones as well but Dalton Carkhuff (vocals/guitar) and Tom Bennett went ahead and made a throne out of bones. A duo. A duo that plays fast, ugly, aggressive, grinding music. Some that do just that, have made ways with only drums and a guitar. It used to be a bit of a shocker but not so much anymore. Scaling it down, son. It's working. Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen didn't need a third or a fourth guy to pull their thing off. Why would these guys? Keep shit simple. Less heads to argue with. Fuck those guys. Right?
I don't know Dalton. Who are you Dalton? I play in Ultra//Negative with members of Ramlord, Robocop and Pastime. This is new project our drummer and me have started, he tells me. He goes on to inform me that a Midwest/East coast tour is in the works for fall. Much like the music is snappy and fast, things happen quickly for Bonethrone. But don't hate. These guys have some milage on them, what with those other bands.
'I'll spit where you walk and watch you crumble before me. How does it feel to be equal to shit?' Mr. Carkhuff hisses and rasps during demo opening track "Empty." What ruckus! What noise!
It's nasty from the get-go, this demo is. Blasting tempos, hard two-speed, distortion, odd guitar pedals (in that piercing Coalesce way), a slow moment to allow you to sink claws into skin and cut away patiently. I'll let you know, the guitar tone is piercing and some of those chords odious. Shank! Shrill and manic vocals seal the deal. Honestly, the vocals are bananas, and I love it. In fact, this is not gonna change any lives, but the vocals, again, lift this one up and so does the guitar tone and surprising variety in the riff department. Both help move Bonethrone away from the herd. Not far. But enough to warrant your attention. "Confide" lets you know you don't have it all figured out by judging this band's cover. Yeah, metal.
"A slave to a process, a slave to my mind. No one deserves this in all of mankind"
Bonethrone seems to draw from various sources of inspirations. I ask the one that puts D back into Dalton, what he feel Bonethrone offers other new bands don't?
What I think it offers that other bands don't is that we have mixed multiple sub genres at a high speed yet still having slower songs and being one of the few styled bands like this out of NH, the scene is dead around here.
That's a pensive answer to a heavy, loaded question. Sensing how serious a turn our conversation has taken I see an oppurtunity most would not. I go deep, I go places one is not advised to go when engaging with new and unrealised talent of great importance. Caution. Throw. Wind.
Would he rather have the ability to dive underwater for a limitless time or watch all Ren & Stimpy episodes in one go in a room covered in Live posters?
Also I would say dive for limitless time, the Mariana Trench has always intrigued me.
