THE BODY & FULL OF HELL - One Day You Will Ache Like // THE BODY & KRIEG split
I learned about THE BODY from their collaborations with THOU. A collaboration that re-created sludge doom metal as heavier than any other string music. How the Body approach music is quite mean and hateful, they take it apart, pick out the ugly parts, tune them down and turn up the volume. And then they add parts and layers like funeral quire descending a requiem for the world.
Now they have become friends with nihilist noisegrinders FULL OF HELL, toured with them and fell pregnant with One Day You Will Ache As I Ache. This album has all the favorite parts that makes our misery love their company: Opening with a noise layered FULL OF HELL trademark grind, descending into aching sludge doom with dual vocals of both bands - one hateful, other desperate- then fucking up LEONARD COHEN's "The Butcher" (nice, I have always had a strong dislike for Cohen's humming/talking "singing" style). The drummers communicate, one frantic, other with a fucked up sense of dub, guitarists take turns in thrashing or droning, everything shot up with electronic noise, either layered or spiking here and there. But it still makes sense.
Which brings me to THE BODY with KRIEG. Another recent collaboration that not only speaks volumes but rattles the listeners bowels. A less layered approach of minimal black doom drone riffs expressing overwhelming sadness and despair, the soundtrack to a mentally deranged autofuneral cut up and/or aided by noise sculptures. Beats delivered by dual skin drums and electronics. A highly enjoyable album for people with ear for both electronic noise and extreme metal on the experimental side. Why? Because it is clear to me that both bands take each other further on this collaboration. I haven't bothered with KRIEG since checking out his early work which a friend aptly named "my-first-sony-black-metal" and haven't picked up THE BODY's last album since they are repeating themselves again.
On this collaboration KRIEG's songwriting comes out with the heaviness they needed to become interesting and KRIEG adds to the nihilistic desperation THE BODY are known for. Which makes sense for a collaboration album. Let me mention the artwork on THE BODY / FULL OF HELL album which reminds me of Hundertwasser mixed with Nick Blinko. Very cool.
